What are the principal ports of export for coffee?

Atlantic Coast

Cartagena, Santa Marta, Barranquilla

Pacific Coast

Buenaventura

What are the principal shipment routes and the approximated shipment times for coffee sold by the FNC?

DESTINATION APROXIMATED DELIVER TIME  (days)

Cartagena – Costa Oeste Estados Unidos 12-15
Cartagena – Europa Norte 13-15
Buenaventura – Costa Este Estados Unidos 8-10

What type of packaging does the FNC use for exported coffee?

The FNC exports green coffee in two different packaging forms

  • Fique Bags
  • Polypropylene bags

What are the characteristics of the fique bags?

The fique bags are fabricated from a natural, biodegradable material obtained from the fique plant.

Characteristics: The following are some of the principal characteristics of the bags elaborated from the fique fiber:

  • 100% biodegradable material
  • Allows coffee to respire
  • Permits coffee to be stowed with less empty space
  • Coffee is typically exported in 70Kg bags that are 70cm wide, 95cm long, and with a tolerance of 3%-
  • Weight:
    • Package No. 7, weighs 700 grams per unit, it is used for the export of standard coffee.
    • Package No. 10, weighs 1,000 grams per unit, it is used for the export of specialty coffee.

Does the labeling process of fique bags have to comply with specific standards?

The inks used to label the packages are elaborated from natural substances that do not affect the quality of coffee.

What are the characteristics of the Polypropylene bags?

The Polypropylene bags are also used to export green coffee. The Polypropylene is a plastic material developed under strict quality control and can be safely used in any of its different applications.

What types of packaging are produced?

For coffee export we use following two types of packaging produced from Polypropylene:

  • Big Bags: These Polypropylene bags are used for the export of both grains and liquids in volumes that are superior to traditional packaging.
  • Jumbo Liner: These are liners produced from Polypropylene used for the shipment of bulk coffee in containers of 20′.

What are the characteristics of these packages?

  • Big Bags: The following are some of the principal characteristics of these Polypropylene bags:
    • Permit coffee to respire while conserving its quality
    • Can store between 1,000 and 1,300 kilos of green coffee
    • Are reusable
    • Reduces handling costs
    • Permits coffee to be stowed on top of each other up to three different levels
    • Grater volume of coffee per packaging unit
    • The standard dimensions are 1.05*wide by 1.05* long by 1.20* high.
  • Jumbo Liners
    • Permit coffee to respire while conserving its quality
    • Are not reusable
    • Reduce logistic costs
    • Are fabricated from sheets of Polypropylene, whose density oscillates between 80 to 120 grams per square meter
    • The principal difference between the Jumbo Liners is determined by the design of the tie used in its principal level.
